A Newcastle company plans to double the size of its workforce by Christmas.

TMT First, a Samsung Authorised Repair Partner, based in Holditch Road have already taken on 40 new staff since the start of lockdown and aim to recruit another 20 by the end of the year.

Since the start of the pandemic thousands more mobiles have come into TMT for repair. Since March, the company has actually seen more than 100,000 mobiles come through the doors for processing, 30,000 of which needed repairing.

They’ve already recruited operational, sales, customer services and warehouse staff, senior managers and repair technicians but with more mobiles due in they need to recruit even more. TMT are particularly looking for experienced mobile phone repair technicians to join their team.

To fill the skills shortage and to ensure there’s a pipeline of skilled technicians TMT is also developing a Digital Device Repair Technician Apprenticeship in partnership with Samsung, and other technical businesses in the UK. It’s thought to be the first of its kind in the country.

With a growing workforce TMT will also be expanding into more space. They’re currently sharing their headquarters with another company who are moving into new premises. After they move into the building next year TMT will occupy the vacant space, giving TMT 43,000 square feet to operate from. That will ensure they have enough room for their continued expansion plans.

The company has continued to operate throughout the pandemic with safety measures in place, winning new contracts with the NHS, polices forces, the Government and local authorities.

They’re also offering staff who bring in an additional new technician a one-off payment of £250 in their pay packet once the new technician has completed a probationary period.

Adam Whitehouse is the owner of TMT, a company he founded in 2006.

He said:

“It has been an exceptionally busy time for us, and we are in a very privileged position to be expanding at a time when the economy has been so badly hit by the pandemic.

“At the start of lockdown, we had 60 staff, we’ve now got 100. By December we want at least another 20 staff onsite. We especially want to recruit repair technicians to help us with the sheer volume of mobile phones we are expecting to come in over the coming months. If there are people out there who have experience of repairing electrical products such as TVs and laptops, we want to hear from them. We have a dedicated training section on site so anyone who needs additional training will be fully supported. Once completed they’ll also become an authorised trained and accredited Samsung technician. They’re ideal appointments for anyone with the relevant experience who wants to work and progress in a fast growth technology company like ours.

Adam added:

“As a business we are looking at a period of sustained growth. We have seen a surge in demand for our services and expect that to continue. To cope with future demand, we’re working towards launching a dedicated Apprentice scheme to ensure we have the next generation of technicians trained up which we’re delighted about. The future is looking bright for us – we’ll have extra space to operate from next year and are currently in the process of having our websites redesigned which will help grow the business further.”
