National property and construction consultancy Wakemans has completed work on the third of four London hotel projects for one of London’s biggest hotel chains, Travelodge.

Wakemans is acting as tenant’s agent on the schemes, which will enable the UK’s largest independent hotel brand to offer more than 700 rooms at prime sites in Aldgate, Wood Green, Finsbury Park and Finchley.

Construction to provide a new £5.1 million, 78 room hotel in the Mall Shopping Centre at Wood Green involved converting the top two floors of an existing four-storey office building and providing a roof extension over an existing multi-storey car park. This project is close to Wood Green tube station and the ground and first floors are occupied by Argos.

Meanwhile, work is underway on Travelodge’s largest ever new-build hotel in the City of London. The 395 room, nine-storey Travelodge at Aldgate, East London is scheduled for completion in April 2018.

Contractor Tolent Construction began work on the £26 million development in Middlesex Street by demolishing a former commercial building and creating a new pedestrian thoroughfare. The site is close to both Aldgate and Aldgate East tube stations and on Sundays the famous Petticoat Lane market runs alongside the hotel.

The Finsbury Park and Finchley hotels are open for business. Within walking distance of the Emirates stadium, home to Arsenal Football Club, and close to Finsbury Park tube station, the 104 room Finsbury Park Travelodge incorporates a Bar Café and has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.

The 128 room Travelodge at Finchley involved the redevelopment of a fourth floor office with a new two-story roof extension. The floors below feature a mix of offices and retail and all remained fully operational whilst the hotel construction work was carried out.

Wakemans Associate Director Nigel Himpson said:

“We are delighted to continue our longstanding relationship with Travelodge on these important London hotel schemes which are set to provide an additional 700 rooms across the capital.”

Tony O’Brien, UK Development Director at Travelodge, said:

”The march of the low-cost hotel sector continues, fuelled by businesses looking to reduce travel costs and the new generation of independent leisure travellers. To meet the growing demand, we are adding further capacity in London, key UK cities and expanding to new markets. The start of construction on our new flagship 395 room hotel in the heart of the City of London is another milestone for our growth. Together with the 15 new hotels we expect to open this year, this will continue the ongoing transformation of Travelodge into a high quality, low-cost brand for both business and leisure.”
