Leading true hybrid construction company Modulek enjoyed their recent visit to Hamble Yacht Services to see how the new build they recently undertook has helped transform services at the marina.

The project’s requirement was for a replacement of small buildings that were no longer fit for purpose. There were a selection of toilets and cabins an old marquee and a small Harbour Master’s office.

Hamble Yacht Services approached Modulek to see how the space could be transformed to maximise potential. Wanting to keep the build sensitive to its unique environment and stunning location on the Hamble, which is an SSSI site, Modulek designers worked closely with HYS to ensure a bespoke, blended building met their requirements.

The new building is clad in kiln-dried wood and protected by a rendered surface, which ensures longevity in an often-harsh marine environment. The upgraded space now offers a sense of luxury to its users with new toilet facilities and a Harbour Master’s office, as well as adaptable space for offices and tenants to increase the revenue and services on offer at the marina.

With several challenges to overcome, including building on a floodplain and reclaimed land, Modulek were able to offer expert knowledge and solutions through modular construction that traditional build would have been unable to overcome.

By using piling and off-site construction, the new build was able to be propelled out of the danger of the floodplain, while the momentum of a structured floor being created off-site, produced in tandem with the piled groundwork, ensured the modules could be dropped and secured into place on arrival.

Director of Hamble Yacht Services, Tim Yetman has been impressed with the modular build process:

“I think modular build is a really sensible way forward for marine construction. There is flexibility, less impact on the environment and less impact on you as a business as you are shortening the time on-site with off-site construction. We have had a great relationship with Modulek on this project, they were on time and budget and the communication has been extremely good.”
