A young designer from Harborne, Birmingham who only started her interior design company two years ago has scooped two prestigious awards for the quality of her company’s work.
Hannah Cockburn (32) director at Cream & Black Interior Design, won the ‘Interior Designer of the year award’ and ‘Best Conversion’ at the recent Northern Design Awards presentation.
The awards were announced at a glittering awards dinner at the Titanic Hotel in Liverpool. Hannah and her team of designers from Cream and Black were presented with their prizes by Wayne Hemmingway from the well known fashion brand Red or Dead and by George Clarke presenter of the Channel 4 design show George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces “We were over the moon to win not one but two awards at the Northern Design Awards. It was the first competition we have ever entered, it’s amazing for our small business to have won these awards” Said Hannah Cockburn.
“We are a small design studio constantly learning and developing our skill set. To be recognised by such experienced industry professionals is an honour. We met some well-known architects and designers on the night including Wayne Hemmingway, Lynda Barker and George Clarke who were very complimentary about our work. I couldn't quite believe it after winning Best conversion of the year and the excitement that my name was called out for ‘best residential interior designer of the year' it was a very surreal but amazing night” continued Hannah.
About the winning projects…..
Hannah won ‘Best Residential Interior Designer of the Year’ for a selection of her most recent projects.
Cream & Black won ‘Best Conversion’ for the project Diesel House, a large old garage building near Malvern in Worcestershire which has been converted into a stylish three bedroom dwelling overlooking the picturesque Malvern Hills. Cream & Black were instructed to manage all aspects of the project, leading each stage of the design and build process.
The design scheme was influenced by the building’s history. The interior design scheme has updated the building while retaining an industrial aesthetic. Cream & Black were keen to recycle materials wherever possible, the old water tank was dismantled and the panels were set into the external walls and painted petrol blue, adding a distinctive feature to the building. The bricks from the recently demolished on-site stable building were then used to create internal exposed brick walls.
Local craftsmen and builders were used in the conversion and much of the bespoke lighting and furniture designs were made by small companies in and around Birmingham.
The award is a big accolade for Hannah and her company who have come a long way in a short space of time. Hannah graduated with a BA (Hons) in Textile Design from Central Saint Martins (CSM) College, London before going on to found Cream & Black Interior Design in 2013.
Birmingham resident Hannah operates her business from offices in Worcestershire. The company also operates from Sale in Manchester where they have ongoing design projects.
The company specialise in creating personalised interiors for both residential and commercial clients. Alongside Hannah the Cream & Black team consists of 3 other members, Mia Matharu (29) Nahla Hawash (26) and Laura Cund (27) who offer a combination of design and industry experience.

How we work:
At Cream & Black, we view interior design as a personal journey, which is why we work closely with our clients to create spaces infused with character and personality. We believe great design comes from collaboration. For us, it’s all about making connections and discovering fresh ways of doing things. It’s about not being afraid to think differently and having fun along the way. We visit Decorex, London design Festival, 100% Design, Tent and various other design trade shows to inspire our designs and expand our knowledge of products and materials.
From hand-drawn sketches to 3D visuals and CAD drawings, we’ll use a variety of tools to help our clients visualise the finished project and give a sense of the scale, proportion and look of the design. We believe design is a tactile experience, which is why we’ll also create mood and sample boards offering inspiration on fabrics, paints, textures and colourways. We work with skilled craftsmen and local tradesmen to source bespoke, made-to-order furnishings; ensuring we keep on track with the overall design objective.
