Integrated design business, One Creative Environments Ltd, has been shortlisted by a panel of experts for its work on NuGen’s proposed Moorside Power Station in Cumbria.

The major nuclear power plant, which is expected to arrive in 2024, has benefitted from creative design competitions by both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Landscape Institute.

Landscape proposals by Worcester’s One Creative Environments have beaten off stiff competition to feature alongside submissions from major international companies in the top-five shortlist, proving size does not matter when it comes to creativity and inspirational design.

The company, which also provides masterplanning, architecture and engineering services, put forward landscape designs seeking to integrate the power station into the surrounding rural character. The brief also included incorporating 13 million cubic metres of excavated material in the form of mounds and bunds.

One Creative Environment’s submission includes earthworks shaped to represent the splitting of the atom, energy and particle trails, as well as an outdoor science park to promote education and discovery through interaction with sunlight, wind and gravity.

It is also inspired by the poetry of William Wordsworth and to top it all off, the designs feature two inspirational art sculptures that through the use of light and mist, create an epic rainbow over the landscaped development site.

“My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky” William Wordsworth on the Cumbrian landscape.

One Creative Environments director, Mark Martin, comments: “To see our landscape designs in the top five is an achievement in itself, and going by the comments received, we appear to have caught the imagination of the public. The landscape designs, discovery centre and rainbow installation will create a destination in their own right, helping the power station blend in with the stunning scenery in the region, whilst providing a place for people to visit and learn about NuGen’s advancement of safe nuclear science and power.”
