Nick Russell, Director of civil and structural engineering consultancy Thomasons, has been named Civil and Structural Engineer Expert Witness of the Year by Lawyer Monthly magazine for his outstanding service. The awards recognise experts with exceptional knowledge and experience in their field, and a strong track record in helping courts reach sound legal decisions.

Nick was nominated by the barristers and solicitors with whom he works. Jonathan Mitchell, Barrister at Ropewalk Chambers, said: “Nick is one of the best expert witnesses I have ever called. He has that rare ability to explain to a layman a difficult, technical subject concisely and with absolute clarity. He is easy to work with, responds quickly and in the witness box presents as a balanced and thoughtful witness. One cannot ask for more from an expert witness.”

Thomasons offers structural, civil and glass engineering design, together with building surveying and advice on health, safety and environmental issues. Nick leads Thomason’s Guildford office. Qualified as both a chartered structural and civil engineer, his significant projects include town centre developments, educational establishments, urban regeneration, and complex alterations to existing buildings. Nick has close ties with the Institution of Structural Engineers, and was President in 2014. He is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey, a member of its Advisory Board and vice chair of the Joint Board of Moderators, which accredits civil engineering degrees.

Recent Thomasons projects include the extension and refurbishment of Chase Farm Hospital near Enfield in North London, and the award winning conversion and extension of Next, Sears Retail Park in Birmingham.

Despite significant growth over the past few years, Thomasons values a personal approach to projects, with senior members of the firm involved at all stages of every project. This has resulted in long-standing relationships with clients, some for as long as 50 years.

As well as offering outstanding civil and structural engineering design and planning work, Thomasons provides building surveying and CDM advice as part of its services.

Thomasons is Constructionline and CHAS accredited. Members of the company play an active role in the IStructE and other industry bodies and are frequently called upon for their expert advice on complex engineering issues.

Thomasons is an ISO 9001 accredited organisation.
