Making Great Headway In Broadmead

Local lawyer Stuart Gist (pictured, right) pounded the pedals on a static bicycle in the middle of Broadmead for 90 minutes yesterday, as part of a fundraising event organised by brain injury charity Headway Bristol which took place at five sites across the city.

Stuart contributed 20 miles to the 575 mile total target chosen by Headway – a distance equivalent to the stretch between London and Lyon.

Stuart said: “Since we were on static bikes we never actually left Bristol, but the mileage goal inspired the riders to give it their all, and I believe we exceeded the target by the end of the day.”

He chose to support the charity because his work as a personal injury specialist in Clarke Willmott LLP’s Serious Injury team regularly brings him into contact with people affected by acquired brain injury, and his department actively supports Headway Bristol and their fundraising efforts.

Stuart said: “Brain injury can be absolutely devastating, impacting affected individuals in so many ways, as well as their families and friends.

“I use my own bike every weekday for the eight mile round trip between my home and Clarke Willmott’s offices near Bristol Bridge, and this makes me particularly conscious of how vulnerable two-wheeled road users are to head injury.

“Headway does a great job helping people rebuild their lives after brain injury and I was really pleased to be able to support them in this way.”

The event’s organisers located 11 bikes across five different locations (Broadmead, Queen Square, Asda Cribbs Causeway, Sainsbury’s Fishponds and Winterstoke Road) with 65 individuals, from 12 different local companies taking part, as well as Headway’s service users, staff and volunteers who also took up the cycle challenge at their centre in Frenchay.

Funds were collected by bucket-shakers at each site – the total raised has yet to be confirmed.
