We are appealing for volunteers willing to act as route marshals when the Queen’s Baton Relay comes through Lichfield District next month.

The Queen’s Baton Relay is an epic journey across the Commonwealth visiting 72 nations and territories over 294 days on the run up to this year’s Commonwealth Games being staged in Birmingham from 28 July to 8 August.

The relay began last October with Her Majesty placing her message to the Commonwealth inside the baton. As baton-bearers make their way the relay aims to inspire hope and collaboration as it connects communities, embraces unique cultures and shares inspirational stories.

On Wednesday July 20 2022, the Queen’s Baton Relay will make its way through Lichfield District borne by nominated baton-bearers. From the National Memorial Arboretum the baton will make its way to Kings Bromley and to Lichfield city via the A515 before heading for Burntwood and Chasewater Country Park.

To ensure the baton passes safely through the district we are appealing for volunteer route marshals.

Their role will be to ensure the safety of the public who line the streets to watch the passing of the baton, ensure the public watches in an orderly manner and does not enter the road when the convoy is in procession.

They will also advise the Zone Manager of any incidents or issues and engage with the public if they have any concerns regarding public order.

The Leader of Lichfield District Council, Councillor Doug Pullen, said:

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting event. It will be fantastic seeing the baton pass from bearer to bearer as it progresses through the district and volunteer route marshals will help make it a day to remember.”
