National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) has selected engineering-led EPC construction firm Burns & McDonnell to be part of its new RIIO T2 Electricity Transmission Mechanical and Electrical Installation Framework.

The framework will last a minimum of five years and will support National Grid’s ongoing investment in the U.K.’s electricity transmission infrastructure, helping to maintain and adapt substation infrastructure as part of the country’s transition to Net Zero. As part of this framework, Burns & McDonnell will undertake engineering and installation activities across a portfolio of substation projects on an annual cycle. This investment will help prepare the grid for a future with more renewable energy sources connected and more electric vehicles, as part of the government’s “Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution.”

This is the second Burns & McDonnell contract win with NGET this year, continuing the firm’s rapid growth in the U.K. In early 2021, Burns & McDonnell was selected to be part of NGET’s five-year EPC construction Framework for Substations.

Burns & McDonnell, which has been operating in the U.S. for over 120 years, opened its first European office in Birmingham in 2017 and has since more than tripled in size. It established a new business practice focusing on mission-critical projects in 2020 and will soon be opening an office in London to serve the European data centre market.

This new framework further solidifies the global partnership between Burns & McDonnell and National Grid. Burns & McDonnell already works extensively with National Grid on a number of projects within the United States, where Burns & McDonnell is headquartered.

Jonathan Chapman, U.K. Managing Director, Burns & McDonnell, said:

“This is another big milestone for Burns & McDonnell, in what has already been a landmark period of growth in the U.K. The talent and hard work of our team has cemented our role as true partners to National Grid at a critical time for the energy sector.

“As the U.K. transitions to Net Zero, I’m proud that Burns & McDonnell has the opportunity to play a leading role alongside National Grid in developing the resilient electrical infrastructure needed to underpin that transition.”

In 2017, Burns & McDonnell opened its office in Birmingham. With more than 120 years of experience designing and building infrastructure around the globe, Burns & McDonnell is now advancing a long-term investment plan in the U.K. With the U.K. energy market undergoing a transformation, our focus is on providing a differentiated service across technical consultancy, engineering services and project delivery as the U.K. adapts to a low-carbon future underpinned by smart technologies.
