Number 38 Clifton re-opens in Bristol bigger and better than ever

-two huge new suites and slick meeting facilities added to boutique townhouse accommodation -

Almost seven years since opening as Bristol’s first boutique townhouse accommodation, Number 38 Clifton has reopened, almost 50% bigger.

This smart double-fronted Georgian merchant house overlooking Bristol’s iconic ‘Downs’ now spills seamlessly into the ‘next door’ building. Two large new suites have been added, as well as a stylish yet functional space for meetings or private dining. At the same time the existing 10 guestrooms and suites have been spruced up with extended services introduced for guests such as full room service ‘breakfast in bed’ and longer reception hours.

A Duo of Stunning New Suites

The stars of the reopening are undoubtedly ‘Room 11’ & ‘Room 12’, which must be two of the best rooms in Bristol. Each has dual aspect views stretching out over Bristol’s rooftops to one side and the lefty ‘Downs’ in the other direction and tops 55 sqm in size. Guests could feel like they are literally floating above the city in another of Bristol’s icon, a hot air balloon.

The new suite interiors give a nod to the seafaring heritage of Bristol and Brunel’s nautical achievements. Painted wooden panelling, bulkhead lighting and feature walls papered with Hugo Dalton ‘Chart’ Wallpaper (part of his Tresco range for Paint & Paper Library nicely connecting to the owners’ Scillies routes).

Both suites have Catchpole & Rye style baths - a bronze bath in front of a bay window with ‘those’ views in Room 11 and Room 12 has a deep chrome bath. Each room has a Hypnos bed with opulent hand-made rich velvet headboard, goose down bedding, hidden wardrobes, a huge walk in drench shower and walls in Farrow and Ball colours (Room 11 - classic Cromarty; Room 12 - rich Railings).

This ‘best address in Bristol’ location puts guests within walking distance of Brunel’s iconic Suspension Bridge, the boutiques and cafes of Clifton Village and three Michelin starred restaurants.

The front of property overlooks the ‘Downs’ with more than 400 acres of grassland perfect for stretching legs and walks/runs to the cliffs of the Avon Gorge with the lofty rear views out onto the Victorian buildings that tumble down the hill towards the city centre and out beyond to the Mendips.

Rooms start from £130 for a double, bed and breakfast. Room 11 is priced from £210 and Room 12 from £245 bed and breakfast per night.

From the moment you arrive at Number 38 you’ll feel welcome and relaxed with a friendly no-fuss, no-paper check in and the offer of a fireside restorative brew in the light-filled lounge. Thoughtful touches such as homemade biscuits, REN products, dressing gowns and slippers in the bedrooms are common features throughout the property, as well as the full room service breakfast for slower risers served until 10am at weekends complementing the hearty spread in the lounge, or a ‘breakfast on the go’ bag for those up and at ‘it’.

Private Meeting/Dining Room

The newly created meeting room on the ground floor is light and airy with, again, knock-out views in both directions. The space comfortably suits up to 16 people for a small conference equipped with HTMI plug-in, 53-inch screen, conference phone, and climate control. For more sociable gatherings this room can double up as for private dining.

The ground floor communal rooms showcase interesting artwork from West Country artists, many pieces from Bristol’s cultural quarter Stokes Croft. And where else will you find a David Hockney in the under the stairs loo?

Bedrooms

No two are the same but the individuality lies more in the space, views and layout rather than strong themes. There are 11 doubles and one twin and each has a super king or king sized double bed, high-thread count bed linen, big fluffy towels and waffle dressing gowns, Roberts radios with ipod docking, plasma screen TVs, Ren toiletries, generous bathrooms and mini fridges stocked with local eats and drinks.

For individual bookings children must be over 12 of age.
