Brindleyplace-based restaurant Maribel has teamed up with national charity, Sense to host an exclusive ‘Dining in the Dark’ event for one night only. The first event of its kind in the city will be a dining experience like no other, taking guests on a journey to awaken their senses. Taking place on Friday 27 September, diners will be blindfolded as they go on a culinary adventure through three-courses designed to tantalize the tastebuds.

Joining forces with Sense, an organisation dedicated to supporting the deafblind community and those living with complex disabilities, the restaurant has worked with the charity to craft a special menu, focusing on texture, smell and sounds. These senses will all be heightened throughout the meal as guests will eat each course blindfolded.

This unique culinary experience will encourage guests to explore their senses, without the usual visionary cues, totally changing the way they interpret taste. Sighted guides will be on hand to assist and will encouraged guests to use their imagination to discuss what they taste, smell and hear.

Working in partnership with Sense, the ‘Dining in the Dark’ event aims to highlight the day-to-day difficulties facing people with sight loss. Sense supports thousands of people across the region suffering with visual impairment, through personalised support through their centres, holidays and short breaks, or in people’s own homes. With £15 amount of the ticket price going directly to Sense, ‘Dining in the Dark’ is an exciting event but with a vital message.

Harvey Pertolla, Head Chef at Maribel comments:

“We eat with our eyes much more than we think; what we see subconsciously flavours the taste of the food. Eating is a multi-sensory experience. It's not just about the taste of the meal, but also the smell, texture, and even the sound. We are so excited to be working on such an incredibly exciting event that really hones in on the sensory-side of dining. It's also a chance not be distracted by the temptation of scrolling through your phone and be fully immersed in the experience!”

Speaking about the event, Carl Williams Community Fundraising Manager at Sense says:

“This is a really exciting and unique sensory dining experience in the heart of Birmingham, and we hope as many people as possible will sign up to help raise vital funds and awareness for Sense, and those who are deafblind or have complex disabilities.“
