One of Weston-super-Mare’s best-known charities is hoping to raise valuable funds by encouraging people to dance the night away to their favourite hits from the 80s and 90s.

Weston Hospicecare hopes to raise hundreds of pounds through two fund-raising concerts being hosted by the resort’s Grand Pier.

The events enable sports clubs, charities and other organisations to raise funds by selling tickets for the nights out. The more they sell, the more funds they raise.

Lorna Withington, Event Co-ordinator at the Grand Pier, explained:

“This is the third year running that we have staged these concerts, which are a great way to help local clubs and organisations to help themselves, while providing great nights out for those who attend.

“Last year’s 90s-themed event sold more than 400 tickets, and this year we are hosting both an 80s and 90s night.

“The idea is simple. The sports clubs themselves sell tickets to either, or both, of the events, and they will retain 50% of the proceeds from the ticket sales to boost their own club funds.

“All we ask is that each club that wants to take part sells a minimum of 50 tickets.”

So far, Weston Rugby Club mini and Juniors, Lympsham Cricket Club, Weston Cricket Club, Weston Crusaders have signed up.

Now Weston Hospicecare has also signed up, selling tickets for both the 80s night and the 90s night.

Rachel Mansfield, Community Fundraiser at Weston Hospicecare, said:

“We saw the concerts on the Grand Pier website, and saw that we would receive £5 for each ticket that we sold, which we could use towards supporting people with life-limiting illnesses, and their families.

“These concerts are a great way for friends, family or work colleagues to get together and enjoy an evening out, and at the same time help a local charity by buying a ticket from our fundraising department, on 01934 423 921 or emailing me, Rachel.mansfield@westonhospicecare.org.uk.”

The Grand Pier Rewinds To The 80s night takes place on Saturday, October 12, and the Grand Pier Rewinds To The 90s night is on Saturday, November 16.

Lorna added:

“We’re pleased to see Weston Hospicecare join us this year, in what is a big year for the charity, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

“The Pier has been a supporter Weston Hospicecare for some time. We sponsored their It’s A Knockout fund raiser earlier this year and have re-branded a November event as Weston Hospicecare’s Fireworks At Sea in support of their anniversary.

“There are lots of ways to raise money for worthy causes, including marathon events and endurance events which require some effort and hard work.

“With these concerts, all you’ve got to do is buy a ticket, put on your dancing shoes and head to the Pier for a great night out, it’s that simple!”

Both nights feature a DJ playing classic hits from the relevant decade, in addition to live performances.

In October, the live act is The 80s Club, a quartet committed to delivering a truly authentic 80s tribute show, with chart-topping tracks from the likes of Bon Jovi, Guns’n’Roses, Journey, Phil Collins, Wham and many more.

For November’s 90s night, a fantastic new girl band, The 90s Project, will perform outstanding vocals, close three-part harmonies and choreographed, high-energy, dance routines to many of the decade’s top tracks.
