Boris Johnston has provided clarity about when weddings can take place again as part of his roadmap out of lockdown and the news has been welcomed by Cornish wedding planners, who have been helping couples navigate the restrictions on weddings for the last 12 months.

The government has announced that subject to the key coronavirus data requiring dates to change, weddings with 15 guests can take place again from 12 April. From 17 May the number of guests at weddings can increase to 30 and from 21 June there will be no restrictions on weddings.

Leading wedding planner Hazel Parsons, co-founder of Out of the Ordinary Weddings welcomed the clarity about when weddings can take place again. She said:

“It is encouraging that restrictions on weddings will be removed from 21 June and that smaller weddings can take place from 12 April. Having some clarity around these dates will be welcomed, both by couples who have had to put their wedding plans on hold, and businesses who depend on weddings for their survival.

“Weddings bring £14.7 billion to the economy annually, supporting jobs and businesses from florists to photographers. These businesses employ over 400,000 workers across the UK. The restrictions on weddings have meant many of these businesses have struggled to survive.

“As wedding planners, we expect weddings to change even after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted in June. Small weddings are now much more socially acceptable, and we expect more couples to opt for smaller gatherings. With lockdown restricting us to our local areas, we also anticipate that elopements will be a key wedding trend, with couples and their nearest and dearest travelling within the UK to celebrate their weddings. Scenic areas like Cornwall and Devon are set to benefit from this trend.”
