Chunk of Devon, award-winning pie and pasty maker, has been selected to represent the pie offering at the new, multi-use Ashton Gate Stadium. As well as being the home of Championship sides Bristol City FC and Bristol Rugby it now offers premiership food to match.
Ashton Gate's executive head chef, George Opondo, wanted to raise the stadium’s game and offer a special experience for both foodies and sports fans alike. George and his team have put together a tasty concessions menu that includes top quality food supplied by the South West’s best producers and suppliers.
George explains: “There are so many great products being made right here in the South West and it was tough making a selection for the new menu. We went with Chunk because they were a great match for Ashton Gate – they make no nonsense, great quality pies and champion the South West.”
Devon-based Chunk has this year won a further four national accolades, bringing its awards tally to 60, making them the UK’s most coveted pie and pasty maker. Simon Bryon-Edmond, owner of Chunk, says: “Chunk is going to be supplying the stadium with three of its all-time favourite pies: Steak & Ale, Chicken and Smokey Bacon and Sheep, as well as the ‘Chunki’ Sausage Roll, handmade with the muscle power of our Hunks at Chunk, who are often mistaken as sporting gods.”
Chunk has been challenging the stereotype of the unhealthy, stodgy pie that is usually synonymous with sports stadia. Simon explains: “Pies don’t have to be unhealthy and Chunk proves this. We offer consumers top quality, tasty gourmet products, without being pretentious. Our rustic gourmet pies and pasties are jam packed with locally sourced goodness and are great hearty nosh for sports fans.”
Ashton Gate is currently undergoing a £45 million pound rebuild to transform it into a 27,000-seater stadium by August 2016. Halfway through the two-year project the new 6,000-seater South Stand has opened along with a double-height glass fronted Sports Bar & Grill, Coffee Shop and Store. The remodeled Dolman Stand shares a linked concourse with the South Stand and its concessions and will soon feature “Market Street” style food from the local area, including tasty Chunk Pies.
