Staff from Notaro Homecare (NHC) in North Somerset are showing their support for society’s ‘hidden’ carers and the important role they play as part of National Dementia Carer’s Day next month (September, 2017).

National Dementia Carer's Day

National Dementia Carer’s Day, which is part of World Alzheimer’s Month, takes place on September 10 and was introduced to recognise and celebrate informal dementia carers, while highlighting what it means to be a carer.

Nicky Norville, Registered Manager at NHC in Weston-super-Mare, which was recently one of three providers to be awarded the final care contract for homecare provision across North Somerset for the next seven years, said:

“All our carers do fantastic work for our service users, working long hours to provide everything they need and we thank them for that.

However, there are ‘hidden’ carers in today’s society that might be looking after friends or loved-ones without receiving payments or recognition so we wanted to let them know that we support them.

“We want to help spread awareness and show our support so we’re offering any carers any help or advice they might need.

All they need to do is give us a call on 01934 422800 and our expert staff will be more than happy to chat to them about care and share their experience as well as offer tips and any other support they can.

“If any ‘hidden’ carers would like to know more about our respite care services or our dementia and live-in care services in order to take the pressure off themselves, they can give us a call.”

Spreading awareness

National Dementia Carer’s Day is now in its third year and support organisations, charities and community groups are being urged to get behind the campaign by spreading awareness and helping to signpost sources of advice and support using #NDCD17.

The day is part of World Alzheimer’s Month, which will highlight the importance of early detection and diagnosis of dementia.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, there are currently 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to more than one million by 2025. One in six people over the age of 80 have dementia.

More than 225,000 people will develop dementia this year, which is one every three minutes.
