People are being encouraged to deposit knives in special bins installed at the Morrisons stores in Burntwood and Lichfield as part of a National Youth Anti-Violence campaign.
The bins, in the car parks of the stores in High Street, Chase Terrace and Beacon Street, Lichfield are among four being permanently secured to help remove knives from the district's streets.
Once they are deposited in the bins, knives are secured inside until they are removed by police officers who will provide feedback on the number of blades collected to Lichfield District Community Safety Partnership.
The knife bins are one element of a campaign to raise awareness of knife crime, which is supported by Lichfield's Community Safety Partnership, Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime Ben Adams and Staffordshire Police, and includes the visit to Lichfield, throughout July, of the iconic Knife Angel sculpture.
Lichfield District Council's Principal Community Safety Officer Yvonne James said: "I am delighted that Morrisons is working with us and hosting knife bins on its premises in Burntwood and Lichfield.
"Although Burntwood and Lichfield are areas with low rates of reported knife crime and violence in the county, the knife bins are part of a multi-agency campaign to educate young people and help prevention.
"The bins are encouraging people to relinquish blades while we raise awareness of the damage that they can do."
Lichfield District Council's Cabinet Member for Community Engagement, Councillor Richard Cox, who was at both knife bin launches, said: "It is vitally important that we do everything we can to alert people to the dangers of carrying a knife, of how the violent use of a blade can ruin lives.
"The knife bins provide a place where blades can be given up safely and securely. I am hoping people will deposit knives in them and help in our collective effort to keep our communities safe from knife crime."
Funding for the knife bins has come from the Locality Deal Fund, provided by Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime Ben Adams, which Lichfield District Community Safety Partnership has allocated to the initiative.
Mr Adams said: "We can all play a part in tackling the issue of knife crime, whether that's through reporting any concerns to Police, educating our young people about the consequences, or businesses installing a knife surrender bin on site.
"I'd like ;to thank Morrisons for their support in offering accessible locations in Burntwood and Lichfield for anyone to safely deposit unwanted knives, as part of this important campaign to raise awareness of knife crime and keep our communities safe."
