Jonas Roy Bloom, a specialist criminal law firm in Birmingham, is pleased to announce that founding partner Steven Jonas has received Birmingham Law Society's Lifetime Achievement Award 2021.

Practising as a solicitor for now 40 years, Steven was admitted as a solicitor in 1981, joining with his father as George Jonas & Co. shortly after he qualified, in 1982. They grew the firm into one of the region's leading criminal defence firms, acting in a number of high-profile cases including overturning a number of convictions obtained by the notorious West Midlands Serious Crime Squad.

Steven continued to run the firm after his father's retirement, and in 2000 forged a tri-partite merger with Nicholas Roy and Stephen Bloom. This created Jonas Roy Bloom, one of the largest criminal law firms in the area, leading the way in the delivery of legal services in an increasingly specialised and challenging market.

Jonas Roy Bloom is now in its 21st year, with six partners specialising in all areas of criminal law, including white-collar crime and regulatory work across the country.

The firm was delighted with Steven’s recognition by Birmingham Law Society, which was a tribute to Steven’s pioneering approach and his position as a leader in criminal law over five decades, regularly appearing as advocate in the Magistrates' Court, Crown Court, High Court and Court of Appeal.

Commenting on receiving the award, Steven said that he applied his parents’ values of 'respect' to his work: respect for others and respect for the rule of law. He also adhered to the philosophy of aiming to be able to help everyone who came through the door, whatever their means.

Steven was recently appointed a Deputy District Judge (Magistrates' Courts) and a fee paid Tribunal Judge sitting in social security appeals, and commented that other solicitors should consider judicial appointments which were no longer the sole province of barristers.

Steven is well known to those around the local courts, and is easily identifiable as "the one with the dickie bow".

Steven is regularly referred to as a leading individual in the Legal 500 and Chambers legal directories, described as a ‘fearless advocate’ whose ‘intellect is immense and as sharp as they come’.
