Ridgeway Primary Academy in Market Harborough celebrated a crowning achievement in Royal Horticultural Society's East Midlands in Bloom competition following a collaboration with David Wilson Homes.

The Leicestershire school won the title of Best Ornamental Garden for its sensory garden, which was built over the course of 12 months with help from the Coalville-based developer.

Recognition in East Midlands in Bloom is a well-deserved feat for the school which, through its sensory garden, has provided its pupils with a safe space for outdoor learning, commemoration and reflection.

Dave Turner, Head of School at Ridgeway Primary Academy, said:

"Since the garden was finished it has been in use daily – from wellbeing walks every morning for our Year 5 and 6 pupils, to drop-in sessions for our younger pupils where they get to explore the plants with their different textures and scents. It has also kept our gardening club very busy!

"The children and staff absolutely love it. Winning the award was the icing on the cake and we can't wait to see how our garden develops over the coming seasons. Thanks to all at David Wilson Homes for their continued support."

David Wilson Homes lent a helping hand to Ridgeway Primary Academy on numerous occasions, from an initial donation of top soil to the creation of pathways and raised beds.

Joining the celebrations at the school was Steve Curtis, Senior Site Manager at the homebuilder's nearby Burnmill Grange development, who assisted the school with its sensory garden project from start to finish.

John Reddington, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said:

"We'd like to congratulate Ridgeway Primary Academy on its award, and it's thoroughly deserved for the creation of a fantastic learning environment for the children.

"It's been a pleasure to assist with this project from start to finish, and we've enjoyed helping the school to bring its vision to life."

The East Midlands in Bloom success didn't end with the title of Best Ornamental Garden, as the school also picked up a Silver Award and received a Judges Award for Community Involvement.

David Wilson Homes' Burnmill Grange development is located on Burnmill Road.
