Promising entrepreneurs at Abbey College Manchester recently organised the annual, charitable ‘Great Abbey Bake Off’.

Inspired by the popular TV show, students on the International Foundation and new Combined Studies Programme conceived the idea as a component of the key skills unit of their programme.

Staff and students were challenged to don their oven gloves and aprons in a bid to make the best cake in aid of charity. Friends and colleagues were invited to donate and indulge in delights such as battenberg and vanilla cake, before judging the spectacular array of treats.

The initiative helped to raise much-needed funds for Cornerstone, a charity that provides support services for adults, children and young people with disabilities and other support needs.

Concluding the competition and celebrating the highly-coveted title of ‘Star Baker’ was Year 13 student, James Mackintosh who rose to the top and impressed with his delectable red velvet cake.

Principal Liz Elam commented:

“The organisation and running of events such as the bake-off to form part of the key skills unit, provide a great opportunity for our students to develop their language, knowledge, ICT and learning skills, the wrap-around components for degree success.

“Some delightful treats were produced and the students, alongside Teacher of Business, Economics and ICT Jayne Hayes, organised a great event to raise money for a fantastic cause.”

Abbey College is a leading independent college in the heart of Manchester, with a fast-growing and vibrant community.
