Families using Ronald McDonald House Charities’ ‘home away from home’ facility during hospital stays at Birmingham Children’s Hospital are to benefit from nearly £10,000 donated by a Birmingham charitable trust.

Birmingham’s Millennium Point Trust has presented its first ever grant to support poorly children and their families at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The Trust has made a grant of just under £10,000 for a sponsored room at the Ronald McDonald House Birmingham that provides bedrooms that enable families to support their children through stays at Birmingham Children’s Hospital – by cooking together, eating together and sharing their experiences. The House also offers a lounge, kitchen and play area for families visiting the hospital for the day.

In keeping with the Trust’s aims, the sponsored room includes technology, games and challenges to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Making the presentation, Judith Armstrong, Chief Executive of Millennium Point, praised the Hospital for its pioneering and caring work.

“The work of Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House Charities is hugely impressive. Last year the House enabled more than 1,000 families to stay close to their children in hospital. We hope our support will enable children and their families to make a speedy recovery in a stimulating environment that has lots to interest and intrigue them.

“It gives me and the trustees great pleasure to see the direct impact we can have as a charity on such a fantastic organisation whilst also meeting our aims of promoting STEM education opportunities.”

Ronald McDonald House Birmingham at St Mary’s Row, which celebrates its 10th anniversary next year, is one of the largest purpose-built accommodation facilities in the UK providing “an oasis” for families visiting Birmingham Children’s Hospital – which each year treats nearly 250,000 children from all over the UK.

“Families and parents of children who use the Ronald McDonald House Birmingham all speak of the support it gives them during difficult and stressful periods. It is an oasis of calm – and a fantastic place in which to rest and keep each other company during challenging times. We are delighted to support their work,”

said Judith who unveiled a plaque to mark the donation at a grant presentation held at the House.

The Millennium Point Trust, which mainly achieves its funding through the commercial activities of Millennium Point, Birmingham’s Eastside anchor building, has this year awarded grants to six different organisations in the education, charity and business sectors totalling £350,000. Each of these supports Millennium Point’s principal focus of encouraging interest in STEM.
