The Midlands' oldest and most loved animal welfare charity Birmingham Dogs Home has launched an urgent Christmas appeal — Christmas wishes to fill dishes — to help care for and feed the hundreds of homeless dogs residing at its charity.

With the number of stray and abandoned dogs dramatically increasing this year, the charity has already taken in over 1,922 dogs in November compared to 1,298 dogs at the same time last year.

What's more, the number of people enquiring to rehome and adopt a dog has significantly dropped, meaning many of the dogs are being looked after by the charity for much longer than normal.

As a result, the charity is calling on the Midlands' pet-loving population to help them fill dishes every day in December by making a donation.

  • £42 will feed a dog for two weeks

  • £21 will feed a dog for one week

  • £3 will feed a dog for a day

In addition to monetary donations, local dog lovers can also show their support by donating food, blankets and toys throughout December to help make a dog's Christmas day a little more special. Plus, dog lovers can attend the charity's popular ‘Santa Paws' photo family fun day events at its Wolverhampton Centre on Saturday 2nd of December and at Solihull College, near the charity's centre in Catherine-De-Barnes, on the 9th of December.

One homeless dog needing support is Shimmer, a young Cane Corso. Shimmer was abandoned in Solihull and was taken to a local veterinary clinic by the kind people who found her. On arrival to the charity, Shimmer was initially anxious but has since bonded with her carers and is showing a fun, loving personality.

Fi Harrison, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Birmingham Dogs Home, said

"We believe that every dog deserves a home to call their own, especially at Christmas but in the meantime, our home is theirs, and with support from the local community we can continue to care for them for as long as they need us."
