An engineer from Bristol has completed a gruelling trek to the top of Machu Picchu in Peru and has raised over £3000 for St Peter’s Hospice in the process.

Steve Webb, a senior service engineer for Whitchurch-based ITEC, took on the challenge and was supported in his fundraising by his employers. All funds raised will go towards supporting patients at Bristol’s only adult hospice.

Steve said: “Raising just over £3000 is an amazing accomplishment and I’d really like to thank my ITEC colleagues, friends and family for rallying together and helping me reach this target.

“St Peter'sHospice simply could not survive without the support and generosity they receive from fundraising. Having visited St Peter’s Hospice and experienced first-hand its amazing work, the positive impact the hospice has on its patients and their families, is clear to see.

“Dedicating this challenge to the staff and patients of St Peter’s Hospice was a real pleasure and I’m proud to feel that my contribution will help in some way."

Machu Picchu, the iconic hilltop ruins of a 15th-century Inca city, stands 2,430m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest.

• As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members.
• All services are provided free of charge for patients and their families and this care costs around £19,000 a day. In order to continue providing vital care for the people of Bristol, St Peter’s Hospice relies on donations from fundraising and money generated by the 50 hospice charity shops in Bristol and surrounding districts.
• Caroline Booth-Morris, corporate fundraiser at St Peter’s Hospice, said: “Steve’s trek was no mean feat but we’re so pleased that he has completed it and that he had a fantastic time. Steve and everyone at ITEC really threw themselves into the fundraising and the result is a wonderful total of £3000, which will make a real difference to our patients.
