Sponsorship from IT and cyber security specialists D2NA is helping a driving school with a difference to change lives.

The Community Driving School offers free lessons to adults needing extra support.

Director John Nicholson says learning to drive has transformed many lives, but the cost of lessons is beyond many disadvantaged people.

Funding from companies, including D2NA helps The Community Driving School CIC to support pupils recommended to them by a host of charities. Formed in 2016, the aim of The Community Driving School is to allow those on a low wage, unemployed, young carers, and students access to jobs previously beyond them and discourage people from driving illegally by accessing funds to assist pay for lessons and obtain a valid UK Driving Licence.

John said:

"Our trainee drivers have included young adults with mental health issues, homeless people and victims of sexual or physical abuse.

"We've helped to rehabilitate a young man who was dragged into gang culture and criminality. Learning to drive helped to give him his freedom and the opportunity to pursue an apprenticeship and get away from the gangs."

"I believe learning to drive is empowering, it helps people to gain confidence and gives them freedom."

John met Chris Yates of D2NA at a business networking event. He added:

"D2NA have been phenomenal. Sponsorship money is always needed and allows us to take more referrals from our charity partners. But D2NA go much further and are enthusiastic champions for our Community Interest Company."

Chris, Technical Customer Success Manager at D2NA. said:

"When I met John it was easy to see his passion and to see how the Community Driving School is offering a unique opportunity for people to change their lives. I told the Directors at D2NA that sponsorship was needed, and they agreed to help."

While D2NA is based in Stoke-on-Trent, the company has a strong presence in London and the South East. Chris works primarily in Kent, close to the Community Driving School's base in Herne Bay.

Thanet Local Children's Partnership Group, part of Kent County Council, are working with the Community Driving school. Manager Sharon McLoughlin described the Community Driving School as "innovative", adding it gave young people a sense of achievement and independence as well potentially opening up the job market.
