Harbourside Traditional Fish & Chips
Opened in 2009, Harbourside Fish and Chips, in the historic Barbican, is one continual success story.
The city chippy certainly knows a thing or two about winning -it started 2014 by gaining some major awards and is ending 2014 with a clutch more.
With its top quality servings becoming a city favourite, the awards soon started coming in, and the biggest successes were clinched this year.
Owners Sarah Lock and Phil Thompson can now say with confidence that the takeaways are served by some of the best trained people in the country, having won the National Fish and Chip Awards’ Staff Training and Development prize.
The same awards also saw manager Tom Hughes come second in the UK as Young Fish Fryer of the Year.
Still the plaudits come. The business was recently declared South West Independent Takeaway in 2015’s Awards, taking it into the UK’s top 10 and earning a place in January’s national final.
Sarah and Phil will also find out if they’ve won the ceremony’s new Healthy Eating Award as they still glow with pride at the success of staff Andy Hillier and Lisa Lishman who reached the semi-final of the Drywite Young Fish Fryer of the Year 2015 in September.
“We have implemented a new healthy eating area of the menu which gives allows us to introduce new species of fish through our new grill,” explains Phil.
“Creating healthy dishes is extremely important to us as becoming healthier concerns us all.
“We’re now among the UK’s top 10 fish and chip shops and the top three in the Healthy Eating Award, something of which we are particularly proud because of its potential to change society’s views on fish and chips.”
For now, Harbourside remains doing what it does so well -serving quality traditional fish and chips.
“With the level of training and the protocols we have, we now produce the same brilliant quality with every meal,” says Sarah.
Phil adds: “We encourage a friendly and upbeat atmosphere and can advise on topics such as fish sustainability and chains of supply, from boat to plate.
