Construction work is now well underway at an important regeneration development in Wolverhampton, after local VIPs visited the site to officially ‘break the ground’.

Saints Quarter on Steelhouse Lane, from Lovell Midlands, will bring Wolverhampton a selection of 151 two, three and four-bedroom houses, including 89 open market and 62 affordable homes by whg.

Kate Martin, City of Wolverhampton Council Director of City Assets and Housing was joined by portfolio lead for housing and land at West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Councillor Mike Bird, Labour Councillor for Ettingshall Councillor Beverley Momenabadi and Rebecca Bennett Casserly, Corporate Director of Development at whg to meet with Lovell regional managing director Stuart Penn and Lovell representatives to celebrate the milestone of breaking ground.

Due to launch in Winter 2019/20, this stylish development will be perfect for first time buyers and families, carefully crafted with Lovell Homes’ inspiring style, unrivalled quality and exceptional value.

The site, which has been lying derelict for more than a decade, is being brought back into use after the WMCA funded £770,000 to clean up the land and prepare it for the development.

Homes England have also partnered with Lovell to provide funding, as part of the Government Shared Ownership and Affordable Homes Programme 2016 – 2021, directly to Lovell to enable the provision of the affordable housing.

Lovell Partnerships is actively seeking affordable housing opportunities to deliver mixed tenure housing, contributing towards the shared ownership and affordable homes programme to meet the demand across the Midlands.

The WMCA has £760 million available to support new housing and commercial developments that bring homes and jobs to local communities. A large part of that is for cleaning up and decontaminating former industrial sites, many of them in the Black Country.

Cllr Mike Bird, leader of Walsall Council and WMCA portfolio holder for housing and land, said:

“This development is a great example of how the WMCA is breathing new life into former industrial land by clearing the way for new homes and businesses.

“It is a key part of the WMCA’s wider programme to advance the delivery of housing within the Black Country, giving local people better opportunities for a good job and an affordable home.

“The funding is part of our ‘brownfield first’ approach to help relieve pressure on the green belt, as the West Midlands needs to build more than 215,000 new homes by 2031 to meet future housing demand and population growth.”

whg’s Corporate Director of Development Rebecca Bennett Casserly said:

“The Steelhouse Lane site will bring much needed high quality and affordable homes to the city.

“We look forward to working with Lovell on this exciting development and playing our part in transforming a run-down area into a place people can be proud to live.”

City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Assets and Housing, Councillor Peter Bilson, said:

“This is another major development site supporting the regeneration of Bilston.

“We can now look forward to seeing more new homes this summer, in addition to over 400 homes already being developed at Bilston Urban Village.

“Saints Quarter will provide greater home choice for the local area, as well as continuing to support the delivery of our housing growth plans for the City.

“This development means more and better homes being delivered for residents and supports the extensive investment already being made by City of Wolverhampton Council with our investors in new housing, leisure, commercial and transport developments in and around Bilston.”

Lovell regional managing director Stuart Penn said:

“We are so pleased to have started work at Saints Quarter and are thrilled we are able to provide a flexible, modern and innovative partnership solution for open market and affordable housing.

“Thanks to our valued and long standing partnership with whg and the grant funding from WMCA and Homes England, we are able to deliver a housing solution which will provide much-needed housing to this thriving area of Wolverhampton, bringing our high-quality homes for exceptional value"

Regional sales director, Trish foster then adds:

“We are looking forward to opening our marketing suite and showhomes in Winter 19/20, alongside our three and four-bedroom showhomes and two-bedroom viewhome.

“Wolverhampton is the ideal location for busy families and first time buyers looking to settle down, with various amenities nearby and excellent transport links ideal for commuters. I would encourage any potential purchasers to register their interest on our website for regular updates on the latest news to avoid missing out on these already popular homes."
