Bristol's much-acclaimed Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital has been shortlisted for two top architecture and building awards.

BDP architects' Bristol studio is one only three teams* in Bristol on the shortlist for a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award in the South West. It has been shortlisted for its work on Southmead Hospital.

Southmead Hospital's Brunel Building is also in the running for a Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) award which recognises exemplary buildings across the region.

This adds to an astonishing awards haul for the ground-breaking hospital, which has already scooped four international, national and regional awards.**

At the heart of the 800-bed hospital is a grand public concourse which simplifies access to the wards and departments. Three interlinked atria for the naturally-lit and ventilated concourse with cafes, winter gardens and artwork create an inspiring environment.

Nick Fairham, architect director at BDP's Bristol studio, responsible for the hospital design, says:

"Our brief was to create the best acute hospital in the UK, a high quality, hotel-like experience for patients and an inspiring and supportive workplace for staff. Delivering a successful project of this scale and complexity is very much a partnership between client and architect and these awards are a testament to the close teamwork we managed to achieve through the project."

The £430m building is the most sustainable major acute hospital in the UK and is designed to support the efficient and sustainable delivery of healthcare.

BDP provided architectural, landscape, interior and graphic design services alongside site masterplanning for the hospital. Its 60-strong Bristol team has a strong specialism in healthcare design and has been responsible for the new Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, and masterplans for the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and Derriford Hospital.
