In England and Wales in 2015, there were 4.8 million crimes committed against business premises. Security for business then has become more and more of an important issue as the years go by.

These top tips from security specialists GPS Installations, who are experts in burglar alarms in Newcastle, will help you to make sure that your business and its premises remain safe all year round. Read on to find out more.

Have you locked up?

Unsurprisingly, many thefts will occur as a result of businesses leaving their windows open or unlocked. As a result of this, it is important that you double-check that all windows are fully closed before leaving the property at the end of a day. Be sure to close and lock roof lights too, as these are an easy access point for burglars who want to break and enter without much fuss.

Make sure that you have locked the doors of your premises as well. This may seem like an obvious point, but many people are convinced they have locked the door even when they haven’t. This makes it incredibly easy for a burglar to walk straight into your premises without being detected by any internal security system. If they are able to enter easily, this poses a threat to both yourself and your staff.

If you’re forgetful when it comes to locking doors, then you should install an access control system, which means that the door will automatically secure itself every time it’s closed. This means that you are able to control what doors are locked and what doors are closed at any one time, and you can control this manually and remotely from a handheld device or piece of software.

Make sure you remain alert

To reduce the risk of your property being subjected to theft or another crime, it is wise to be vigilant. Make sure that all members of staff are trained and that they’re able to spot any potential threats or dangers as soon as they appear, and these include any unfamiliar individuals as soon as they arrive on-site.

Your employees have the right to question suspicious individuals within the workplace. All members of staff should be wearing a lanyard or some form of identification, and all visitors should have the appropriate identification and lanyard. If they don’t, then they should be questioned as to why they don’t accordingly.

If you haven’t already, then it’s important that you install a visitor management system within your premises that allows you to monitor everyone who is inside and outside the building at any one time. By doing so, you can monitor and resolve any suspicious activities or people as and when they appear on-site.

What’s out of sight isn’t out of mind

Are scrap metals, tools and other vital materials lying around your premises, appealing to potential thieves? To avoid this problem, then make sure that all items are locked away at the end of the day. Scrap metal is often searched and patrolled for through many areas such as industrial estates, and at times these materials can be stolen or taken without permission.

Your best option is to make sure that you have a waste management system in place that is robust and accounts for all of the waste that you have on site. This is because waste can also often be stolen or taken without permission.

Never underestimate CCTV

Technology surrounding CCTV is changing all of the time, and many of these systems can help boost the security of your business premises. Through surveillance, you can monitor trends within your workplace; for example, are certain members of the public wandering around the car park – or are visitors going to cordon off areas of your site without permission? All of these things could potentially lead to a security breach that can be prevented with the appropriate CCTV security measures in place.

There are CCTV systems that incorporate infra-red technologies within a monitoring system, which will help to detect intruders within any of your buildings, whether this is in exposed lighting or light that is compromised, or darkness when all of your lights are turned off; these types of technologies are designed to offer parameter protection as well as smart tracking features.

As an added safety feature, infra-red designs can monitor vehicles and personnel that have entered a protected area of your premises, from the moment they enter until they leave. This means they can be detected, and security services or the police can then be contacted before any of assets are stolen on site.
