Alfreton based windows and doors manufacturer, Gowercroft Joinery, has scooped the ‘Family Business of the Year’ category of the prestigious 2021 Midlands Business Awards.
The annual award, now in its 15th year, showcases the entrepreneurship, innovation and business growth of the region’s most dynamic and successful companies and organisations across a wide range of industries and sectors.
Formed in 1998 as a family run business, Gowercroft has a remarkable success story, having grown from a modest three-man joinery workshop, using second-hand equipment, to one of the fastest-growing timber window and doors manufacturers in the country with a string of high-profile projects to its name.
According to Managing Director Andrew Madge, the company’s success was based on grit, determination, and its bold vision of its future as a top-quality high-end manufacturer.
“Early on, when my father co-founded the company, we decided to adopt a strategy of controlled growth by targeting sectors where we could respond to significant growth opportunities and genuinely add value with innovative new products, which would differentiate us from our competitors,”
said Andrew.
During its 23 years of uninterrupted trading, this positive approach to the market has resulted in year-on-year growth and the development of three core market-leading product lines, including the award-winning Heritage range of windows and doors, which incorporates energy efficient materials such as Accoya® timber and the latest ultra-thin vacuum glazing.
To keep pace with sales, the company has streamlined its manufacturing operations with a £350,000 investment in state-of-the-art machinery and software, as well as adding a 10,000 square feet manufacturing unit to its workshop in Alfreton, Derbyshire. The company has also continued to upskill its existing employees and has taken on a further eight new staff in the last year.
