20/20 Projects, the Falmouth-based interpretation agency, has completed the installation of an exciting community and heritage hub at The Old Sardine Factory. Officially opened on Monday 2 July, the centre is part of Looe Harbor Commissioners' vision for the redevelopment of their Sardine Factory site on the quay side of West Looe, designed to regenerate the harbor town and boost the local economy.

20/20 worked with the clients to develop an interactive and immersive visitor centre with features appealing to all ages, interest and abilities. As part of a wider development that includes a climbing and activity centre and cafe, the exhibition is a first class visitor experience and educational resource that will interest visitors and the local community alike.

Jaimie Sibert, Managing Director of 20/20 says;

“The Old Sardine Factory has been really rewarding project for 20/20 to work on. Our team’s full range of creative and practical skills have been brought into play on this project, to deliver a truly immersive and engaging experience for everyone to enjoy throughout the year.

“With our base in Falmouth, we particularly enjoy working on projects that promote and showcase Cornwall, and we are proud to have been able to use our experience of delivering creative and engaging visitor experiences to benefit our home county.”

Chief Executive and Harbor Master, Tina Hicks said

“The Sardine Factory will be a huge asset to the town, particularly for West Looe. It will not only encourage the economic sustainability of the local community, but will ensure that Looe continues to be a thriving fishing port, holiday destination and vibrant place in which to live and work.”

Highlighting that the majority of the work on the development has been carried out by local people, Tina added,

“I feel extremely proud that we have such talent and craftsmanship within our local community.”

From navigating the huge 13m x 11m map on the floor, to taking a virtual ride beyond the Banjo Pier with the Looe RNLI, the heritage centre brings Looe's stories to life using video, sound, objects, games, and even touch and smell when discovering smugglers' contraband in a cut away boat hull.

20/20’s experience in working with the design and build of visitor centres, exhibitons and town wide interpretation schemes allowed the company to see the big picture in this project. The building and displays are tailored to encourage greater engagement with Looe as a whole, telling and exploring its stories using a combination of archive and contemporary sources presented using sensory and digital media.

Jaimie explains

“We designed the centre in a way that allows visitors to connect with what makes Looe unique – to see beyond the idea of a generic ‘Cornish seaside town’, and to create a space where the local community can feel a greater part of where their Looe has come from, and where it is headed.”

20/20 has an impressive track record in similar projects, having delivered an extensive portfolio of projects including local schemes at Heartlands Visitor Centre, Bude Tourist Information Centre, Falmouth Town Centre and at a range of National Trust properties in the South West and nationally. The completion of the heritage centre in Looe reinforces their position as one of the county's top interpretation agencies.
