Caroline Weir has been named as Vauxhall Scotland Player of the Year for 2016.

The Scotland and Liverpool Ladies midfielder topped the public vote on www.vauxhallfootball.co.uk to claim the award ahead of Kim Little, Hayley Lauder, Jane Rose and Joanne Love.

Weir was instrumental in helping Anna Signeul’s side qualify for UEFA Euro 2017, Scotland’s first ever major championship.

The Dunfermline-born star has been a key part of the Women’s side since her debut in 2013, and she has now played 31 times for her country.

Weir, who was recently included in the squad for the upcoming Cyprus Cup tournament, expressed her delight at the award.

“It’s a fantastic honour to receive this award and one that I will treasure,” said Weir.

“Women’s football has never been so popular in Scotland and we are delighted with what we have achieved so far.

“We are all very excited about going to Holland this summer and showing the rest of the continent what we can do on the big stage.”

Lorna Morison, Sponsorship Marketing Specialist at Vauxhall, said: “It gave me great pleasure to hand the trophy over to Caroline on behalf of Vauxhall.

“We are proud of our association with Women’s football and look forward to supporting Caroline and the Scotland team on their journey to Holland this summer.”

Scotland have been drawn in Group D for the competition which starts on July 16th. Signeul’s side will face rivals England in their opening game, before taking on two powerhouses of European football in Spain and Portugal.
