Somerset locals will have the chance to watch top female cricketers from England and Australia at Millfield in July for a series of test matches between England Women, the Australia Women’s A team and some of the best female cricketers from the West Country for the Kia Summer Smash Western Festival.

The school will welcome England’s womens’ team and their academy, as well as Australia’s womens’ A team for a three-day test match from 11am on the 12-14th July and a T20 battle from 11am on the 16th & 18th July.

Millfield will also host 12 of the West Country’s best clubs for the Kia Summer Smash Western Festival from 9am on 20th July. The teams, including Bridgwater CC, Bath CC and Andover CC, will battle in the one-day festival to become Kia Western Champions and progress to finals day at the Kia Oval in Kennington, south London, in September. The Kia Summer Smash is a brand-new competition organised by The Cricketer magazine in conjunction with Kia, long-term supporters of women’s cricket.

Millfield is well-known as one of the finest cricketing schools in the UK, with seventeen teams (13 boys and 3 girls squads) in active competition against schools across the region. The U14 and U15As and Meyers XI fixture lists are largely made up of fixtures against counties and county academies.

Millfield’s thriving girls’ programme includes numerous county fixtures and matches against Somerset and Wales. Two Year 10 Millfield cricketers, Jess Hazell and India Owen, received call ups to join Somerset Women in the County Championship over the May half-term.

The school is building a state of the art indoor Cricket Centre, which is due to open in November. The new £2.6m centre will feature new PitchVision technology on three lanes, a state of the art 4G fielding area, three adaptable bowling and batting surfaces, as well as five nets and an expansive 22 metre run-up, placing Millfield at the forefront of school and university facilities.

Millfield Director of Cricket, Mark Garaway, says,

“We can’t wait to welcome the participating clubs and cricketers this summer to Millfield, where so many future stars are nurtured and developed. The Kia Summer Smash promises to be a fantastic addition to the ever-developing pathway for girl’s and women’s cricket, and Millfield are so pleased to be playing a key hosting role within the UK’s fastest growing female sporting revolution.”

The events are free and open to the public, with free parking at Millfield’s Swimming Pool car park and food and drink stalls available from the Wilson Cricket Pavilion. For more information please visit: www.kiasummersmash.co.uk/western-festival
