Abbey College Manchester students recently celebrated an exceptional year of success at the annual graduation and awards ceremony, held at the iconic Radisson Blu Hotel.

In recognition of the students’ achievements, they were each presented with their graduation certificates by the honoured friends and associates of Abbey College Manchester, including representatives from partner universities, former staff members and other supporters of the college. Throughout the evening, a number of students were also highly-commended with Gold Standard awards and acknowledgements for attainment, resilience, progress and perseverance.

Alkhat Akhat (19), of Blackfriars Road, Salford, was presented with the Maths Award for his outstanding achievement and commitment to the subject, in recognition of John Deacons, a former teacher who died last year.

This year, Head of Religious Studies, Nicky Cathery, was honoured with the Jane Barraclough Award, an accolade made in recognition of the late, much-loved reverend of the Unitarian Chapel on Cross Street. Nicky was presented with the special award due to her contribution to joining together the college community.

Students, staff members, family, friends and other guests enjoyed an array of musical talent throughout the joyous ceremony as pianists, guitarists and vocalists performed a variety of both traditional and original songs.

Liz Elam, Principal at Abbey College Manchester welcomed the visitors and said:

“It is my pleasure to welcome you all here today and I am so pleased to see parents, friends of the college and our Year 13 students come together on this last occasion to celebrate as a college community. The fact that we are all here today in this supportive atmosphere confirms our college motto of ‘Achieving Success Together’.”

“Some students started their journey with us three years ago, while others have been with us just nine months, but they are all recognised for their determination, hard work and accomplishments. What you’re seeing here today is decision makers, innovators and leaders of the future.”
