The Lunch and Learn scheme has been developed by One Manchester to help children across Manchester who are most in need. It is anticipated that over the course of the summer holidays there are a large number of children who would usually be eligible for free school meals unable to access nutritious lunches on a daily basis.

Thanks to the help of volunteers from the local community, the scheme ensures that pre-packed nutritious lunches are delivered to children attending holiday clubs in South and East Manchester. Young volunteers between the ages of 14 and 18 are also helping out whilst gaining food hygiene qualifications.

The support from Evans Halshaw means that volunteers have daily access to a vehicle and a dedicated driver to complete their deliveries to these locations.

Other businesses have also shown support for the scheme including cloud hosting firm, UKFast, which has provided significant funding to help purchase supplies, and Fareshare Manchester which supports local causes to access surplus food from the food industry.

Michelle Wright, Youth Opportunities Coordinator at One Manchester, said:

“When children are in school, parents know that school meals are available and their children are well fed. Those families who get free school meals miss that provision and don’t have that comfort in the summer holidays.

“This project helps bring together companies, like Evans Halshaw, who want to make a difference to the local area and volunteers from the community who have kindly given their time to come along and help make healthy lunches.”

John Ogden, Dealer Principal at Evans Halshaw Ford Ashton added:

“When we were approached by the team at One Manchester we immediately knew we wanted to do something to help. At Evans Halshaw we believe in making a positive impact to the communities in which we are based so this was the perfect opportunity to help give back.”
