A National Trust property, near Worcester, opened its doors to Channel 5 for a new series which will celebrate the stunning estates, historic houses and miles of breathtaking countryside and coastline in the conservation charity’s care.
Croome features in the first episode of ‘Secrets of the National Trust’ with presenter Anneka Rice.
The series, hosted by Alan Titchmarsh, will uncover hidden rooms, archaeological discoveries, surprising wildlife and, through the use of filming techniques such as drone cameras, viewers will gain a rare perspective of these fascinating buildings. Alan will be joined by a team of National Trust specialists who will showcase new discoveries, inspiring conservation work and fascinating archives.
In the first episode Alan will be at Knole where he will take an in-depth look at the history of the property and key conservation projects. Alongside this, is a feature by Anneka Rice to reveal how the famous landscape gardener ‘Capability Brown’ also designed a property, with a difference. During her day at Croome, Anneka spent some time rowing along the snaking river that meanders through the parkland. She also chatted to Michael Forster-Smith, Croome’s General Manager, about the fascinating story of Croome’s ‘house within a house’ – the 17th century red brick building that was enveloped by the Croome Court that you see today and afterwards she rolled up her sleeves to help with repairs to one of its walls in the basement.
“We were delighted to welcome Anneka Rice to show her the river, park and house that ‘Capability’ Brown designed in the 18th century for the 6th Earl of Coventry,” said Michael Forster-Smith, Croome’s General Manager. “She was the first person in many years to take to the water in a rowing boat, and it looked great to see a boat on the river again.”
This first of six weekly episodes in the series airs on Tuesday 7 February at 9pm on Channel 5.
Croome is open throughout the year. The park and lakeside are open from 10am until 4.30pm and Croome Court is open from 11am to 4pm every day. Normal admission applies.
