Commitment to cutting energy bills fuels rapid growth

Q: When does a rollover mean you’re certain to end up a loser?

A: When it happens to your business energy contracts!

That’s because your energy provider probably reeled you in with a great short-term deal on the price of your gas or electricity. You’ll have had a year or more to reap the benefits of that reduced rate, but once your contract comes to its end, your supplier thinks it’s payback time.

So now you’re on its ‘variable tariff’ rate’ rate, which is well above the figure that first tempted you to sign up – and your failure to act quickly enough is now costing you more every month.

That is, unless you sign up with Exchange Utility.

A new type of business energy comparison service, they don’t just cast you adrift at the end of your contract, as directors Kelly Ivison and John Baker explained.

“Our model is based on building long-term partnerships with UK businesses, whatever their size or type,” she said.

Businesses sign a one, two or three-year contract and Exchange Utility’s consultants carry out an audit of their current supply agreements, so that they can illustrate the savings which can be achieved.

And with as many as 1.3 million businesses in the UK believed to be overpaying for their energy to the tune of £500million a year, Exchange Utility brings the benefits of bulk-buying to its customers, by passing on the benefits it gets through negotiating directly with a carefully-chosen group of suppliers.

Susan Wheeldon, Financial Director at Wheeldon Brothers Waste, said: "We found Exchange Utility’s very straightforward service saved us money quickly and easily. We continue to reap the benefits of working with them."

“We can generally save businesses money even if they stay with the same supplier,” said company Director John Baker. “And there is no danger of them rolling over onto a higher tariff, because we will contact them when their existing contract is coming to an end. Customers can then switch to another deal with either the same or another of our carefully-chosen roster of suppliers.

“The savings businesses can make through a contract with us aren’t one-offs – we can help them get the benefits of our accumulated buying power month after month, year after year.”

Sparking A Growing Business

Testimony to Exchange Utility’s success is that it is soon to move to bigger offices in Bury, Greater Manchester, and expand its workforce from 160 to 410.

That’s a pretty good rate of growth for a business only established two years ago. And although at the time of writing, the new offices were still taking shape, completion is due within the next month, with most staff in place by mid-May.

It’s hoped that the new town centre site will be a big help to the company in attracting people hungry to work in a vibrant, fast-moving business – as well as making a major statement to its customers that it is planning for the long term.

“Our belief is that people running a business have far better things to do than shop around for the best deals on their gas, electricity and water,” Mr Baker added. “With our service there is no danger of them sleepwalking into paying more than they need to, and we will make sure that they have certainty over this major element of their overheads.”
