  • Three British low-carbon businesses each win £40,000 of no-strings attached funding.
  • They join three other finalists competing for the national Shell Springboard crown and an overall prize of £150,000.
  • Shell Springboard supports young, innovative low-carbon businesses to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Endo Enterprises alongside LightFi Ltd and Carbogenics, was last night named a regional winner of the Shell Springboard programme, hosted at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre in Aberdeen.

Endo Enterprises, a start-up from Cheshire, has developed a liquid – EndoTherm – which, when added to wet central heating systems such as radiators, reduces the surface tension of the circulating water by 60%, improving the thermal contact area throughout the heating system. This means that the water heats up more quickly in the boiler and more heat is transferred from radiators to rooms.

Tests show energy savings of up to 15% from overall improvement in central heating efficiency. They have a patent pending for the liquid and Sainsbury’s are already using it in 160 stores.

The three companies will compete against the three other regional winners at the national Shell Springboard final, taking place in London on May 10, 2018. The national winner will receive a further £110,000, taking their total prize to £150,000.

Alongside funding, finalists receive essential business advice; from growing their business and building their brand through to guidance on getting the most out of other Shell initiatives, like the Access to Finance Navigator, which helps low-carbon entrepreneurs identify and access new sources of funding.

Now in its 13th year, Shell Springboard has awarded £4 million to almost 100 low-carbon entrepreneurs – and this support delivers results: 84% of winners are still in operation five years after starting-up, compared to a national average of approximately 45%.

Gareth Thistleton, Shell’s Head of UK Social Investment said:

The quality of the entrepreneurs coming through Shell Springboard makes me really excited about the future of the UK’s low-carbon energy sector. Shell is thrilled to be helping these young businesses and I can’t wait to see what their future holds.”

John MacArthur, Shell Vice President, Group Co2, said:

“The low-carbon ideas of these businesses are exactly the sort of innovations that we’ll see at the forefront of the energy transition. LightFi Ltd, Endo Enterprises and Carbogenics are notable for their impressive originality and inventiveness and I wish them best of luck for the national final.”

Benjamin Sallon, Managing Director of Endo Enterprises said:

“We are very proud that ourEndotherm technology has been recognised by the Shell Springboard awards. The awards will make a big difference to our work to reduce energy consumption and share the cost and environmental benefits of doing so.”

Shell Springboard is one way that Shell is assisting others with low carbon energy solutions.

We are also playing our own part in the transition towards a low-carbon future. We aim to cut the net carbon footprint of our energy products – measured in grams of CO2 per megajoule of energy consumed – by around half by 2050. By 2035 we aim to reduce it by around 20%.

This will be achieved through a range of means including providing lower-carbon fuels, supplying natural gas for power and operating more efficiently.

Our New Energies business, set up in 2016 and focusing on new fuels and power, supports this ambition.
