B&M Waste Services have continued and extended the scope of their sustainability programme. At the very heart of this was their carbon neutrality, first established in 2011, and B&M Waste Services was one of the first waste management businesses to successfully achieve carbon neutrality to the exacting standards.

B&M Waste Services, have achieved Carbon Neutrality for the eighth year running. This year, the confidential waste arm of their business, B&M Secure Shredding, has also become Carbon Neutral, making them the first shredding business in the country to achieve such an accolade.

Achieving carbon neutrality to the British Standards Industry (BSI)’s Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 2060 since 2011, B&M Waste Services has offset over twenty five thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide by supporting Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certified clean energy projects around the world – including land-fill gas reclaim projects Their work has seen them support projects across the world including in Indonesia, Brazil, China Turkey and India. Also their work continues to include extensive tree planting in the North West region, in based in schools and community sites.

Coupled with supporting carbon reduction projects in developing countries, the company continues to reduce emissions year on year through their commitment to reducing their own energy consumption. They have focussed on cutting buildings and transport fleet energy through a variety of measures (behavioural and investment in technologies)- which is supported by their ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Standard certification. This has meant that whilst the business continues to grow in size and profit, emissions have significantly reduced. Emissions per employee have gone down 33% from 2010 and 17.5 % since last year. Emissions per £M turnover have decreased by 54% since the 2010 baseline year and 20% from last year.

Not only are they putting sustainability at the heart of their own operations, they are extremely proactive in helping their customers improve their environmental impact. Their recent ‘Simple Swaps Audit’ initiative is helping companies they work with not only recycle or reuse their waste, but make simple swaps and purchasing changes (e.g. plastics) to minimise waste output in the first place, and reduce their Carbon Footprint.

Mick Ashall, Director at B&M Waste, said:

“We’re so proud to achieve Carbon Neutrality for yet another year. It’s more than a status to us; reducing our carbon footprint is one of our core business principles and at the heart of what we do. This year, we’ve committed to supporting carbon offsetting projects including tree planting in the UK, protection of trees in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and Turkey Landfill gas recovery. We continue to support our customers in their waste minimisation projects through our Simple Swaps audit, and look to continue to maintain excellence in sustainable waste management solutions across the UK”

B&M Waste Services works with Carbon Footprint Ltd to assess the carbon footprint of their business using a formal Carbon Management Plan, which documents their carbon reduction targets year-on-year.

Carbon Footprint Client Director, Dr Wendy Buckley, commented:

“B&M Waste Services continues its fantastic commitment to climate change mitigation (ahead of any legislative requirement requiring them to) – it is particularly good to see them not only reducing their own carbon emissions by impressive amounts but proactively educating their clients to reduce their own."
