The West of England's young people are being encouraged to channel their inner Sir David Attenborough.

The region's Mayor, Dan Norris, announced a new region-wide film competition in partnership with Bristol conservation charity Wildscreen at his annual Schools Summit at Ashton Gate Stadium.

The competition challenges under 18s to produce a live action or animated short film or take a still photograph of local wildlife and landscapes.

It will encourage

"local youngsters to explore the beauty of the natural world on our doorstep",
says the Mayor.

While young people are known for being curious about wildlife, research shows the Gen Alpha and Gen Z generations are among the most disconnected from nature ever. A recent study found that the number of children visiting green spaces has halved in a generation.

Mayor Dan Norris says:

"I'm proud to launch the Sir David Attenborough Wildscreen film competition.

"I'm challenging the region's youngsters to grab their phone or tablet and get out there and document the West's wildlife wonders."

The best videos and photos will feature on Wildscreen ARK. This is a new online platform that is set to become the world's largest collection of natural world content, which will also be used to help with the roll out of new Natural History GCSE.

Winners will be chosen later this year by an expert panel of judges, plus the regional Mayor. Prizes up for grabs include professional camera equipment and tickets to Wildscreen Festival film screenings.

The Sir David Attenborough film competition will launch in May.
