How do electric chargers work?

An electric charger is required for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It is similar to your phone's battery, but on a much larger scale.

The charger pulls power from a 240v outlet or the grid and into the vehicle, just like a phone charger.

At a charging station, you may need to use a key fob, it may be free of charge, you may need to use an app or just pay with your debit/credit card. There will be clear signs to show what you need to do, but if you are at home all you need to do is park up and plug it in.

Types of chargers

Rapid chargers are the fastest way to charge your EV. In just 30 minutes, you could get up to 200 miles of charge. Home chargers are unlikely to be rapid chargers as they need three phase power, so you will likely have a 3.7kW or 7kW charger installed.

EVs are capable of charging on chargers with a higher charge rate than they can handle. They will simply accept the maximum rate that they are set up for and have built-in charging limits.

CEO of Echion Technologies Jean De La Verpilliere states that this will only improve with the introduction of lithium-ion batteries that can charge exceptionally quickly. The prototype, Verpilliere claims, can charge in 6 minutes"without impacting the safety or life of the battery."
